In it for the long haul: Lancom supports Gaia Engineers for over two decades

About Gaia Engineers

When your company’s business is intellectual property, exclusively performed digitally, the availability of quality support and insightful technology expertise is crucial to success. That’s why Gaia Engineers has relied on Lancom Technology's IT services for more than 20 years, with a team of professionals ready to take care of any issues never more than a call or email away.

Auckland’s Gaia Engineers provides geotechnical engineering solutions supporting major infrastructural developments across New Zealand. The consultancy offers proven expertise for projects including rail, mining, tunnels and shafts, land subdivision, and commercial infrastructure. Among its clients are the New Zealand Transport Agency, KiwiRail, and many more. The company is ISO9001:2015 accredited and a member of the Association of Consulting and Engineering, New Zealand.

"The best description is probably ‘value for money’ and we get the flexibility which is necessary when your technology requirements change from one day or week to the next. When we do need support or assistance, Lancom Technology is always there when help is required."

Situation

When Gaia Engineers first looked for a managed services provider soon after its 2001 founding, it settled on Redbrick Technology, and immediately enjoyed delivery and close attention from a similarly small service provider. “We realised back then that if something computer-related doesn’t work, then nor can we,” recalls Director Martin Ma. “Our work is primarily intellectual and relies heavily on our computer systems. Without our IT, there is little productivity.”

As an engineering consultancy, they don't require fulltime IT staff and a single person isn’t likely to offer the diversity of knowledge and capabilities required for effective support. “That’s what makes an outsourced service provider so attractive. It doesn’t matter what sort of issue we might have, or technology we might want to introduce: a specialist offers teams of people with capabilities in multiple fields. And that works to our advantage.”

Solution

When Lancom Technology acquired Redbrick in 2019, this value proposition was further enhanced, with the larger company offering even more in terms of capabilities and deeper cloud technology expertise. Notably, Ma says there was no interruption in service delivery throughout this process. “What we’ve found is that Lancom is an organisation which has accurately met our requirements over time, even when those requirements change”

Importantly, explains Ma, Lancom Technology offers systems and documentation specific to Gaia Engineers which supports service continuity. “That’s essential because if, for example, we’re onboarding a new employee, that person very quickly gets their new machine with all the tools needed to get to work, with no fuss. That contributes to a positive user experience for our people”

Among the services the company receives from Lancom are ongoing support for its staff, strategy to support its use of technology and a parallel backup and restore system, augmenting its in-house backup. “That provides peace of mind so we know if something happens to a server or any device, we can resume work almost immediately. And if a major piece of infrastructure goes down or is damaged, we know there’s an image we can download with minimal business interruption.”

Results

Ma says the lasting relationship with Lancom Technology comes down to consistent value delivery. “The best description is probably ‘value for money’ and we get the sort of flexibility which is necessary when your technology requirements change from one day or week to the next. When we do need support or assistance, and Lancom Technology is always there when help is required.”

And, Ma confirms that, thanks to the relationship, Gaia Engineers has never needed to add IT staff to its payroll. “We just don’t have any need for an in-house IT specialist, while getting all the technology specialisation we need. And that’s great."
