Vision and flexibility: How Lancom Technology supports New Zealand Mint’s global ambitions

About New Zealand Mint

When Vedran Babic took the helm at New Zealand Mint, he brought with him a clear vision: keep the business nimble, innovative, and poised for global growth. But to achieve that, the company’s IT backbone needed a serious upgrade. Enter Lancom Technology, a partner Babic turned to in September 2024 to stabilize, secure, and futureproof New Zealand Mint’s operations. The result? A technological foundation that’s keeping pace with a company in constant evolution, supporting its dual brands - New Zealand Mint Trading for trading of bullion, and Agoro for collectibles - a fast-growing global collectible brand focused on premium products, storytelling, and licensed IP.

New Zealand Mint, established in the 1960s, has grown from its roots in bullion trading to become a global player in commemorative coins and licensed collectibles. As the first mint to license Disney—producing what Babic jokingly calls “Mickey Mouse money”- it now serves customers worldwide, partnering with iconic brands and operating its physical bullion branch in Auckland. With a 40-person team, including overseas staff, New Zealand Mint balances retail bullion, and wholesale bullion trading, and a collectibles business with an online platform and global partnerships.

Situation

By mid-2024, New Zealand Mint’s ambitions were clear: expand its global footprint, develop new channels, and innovate its product offerings. But its existing IT setup wasn’t keeping up. “We’re a fast-moving organization, constantly evolving and adapting,” says Babic, CEO of New Zealand Mint. “We needed an IT partner that could support us from a ‘backbone’ standpoint - someone aligned with where we’ve been and where we’re going. That’s why we shifted to Lancom - we wanted someone better aligned to our vision.”

The company’s predominantly Microsoft-based IT estate incorporates both Windows and Mac devices and powers a complex operation - domestic retail, international wholesale, and a globally distributed collectibles arm.

But as growth accelerated, New Zealand Mint required more than just basic IT services. Security, disaster recovery, and the flexibility to pivot quickly were non-negotiable. “We don’t settle for the status quo,” Babic explains. “Our previous provider wasn’t cutting it. As such, we needed a partner with the muscle to match our pace.”

Babic, who had worked with Lancom Technology at a previous employer, knew they could deliver. “There was the benefit of Lancom being a known quantity,” he says. “It wasn’t just about the services—plenty of companies offer those. It is the people, the care, and the responsiveness that make all the difference.”

Solution

In September 2024, New Zealand Mint brought Lancom Technology on board to overhaul its IT foundation. The initial focus was on stability: 24/7 support for a team spread across time zones, disaster recovery and business continuity planning, and beefed-up security measures. “Growth and transformation are core to our agenda,” Babic says. “We needed a provider that could keep up with a business in a constant state of evolution.”

Lancom quickly proved its worth during onboarding. “The transition was smooth,” Babic recalls. “They engaged well, executed efficiently, and we’ve made solid progress on multiple fronts.” Beyond the basics, Lancom’s expertise as an Advanced AWS Consulting Partner and Microsoft Solutions Partner brought added depth—mitigating risks and enhancing system security without tying New Zealand Mint to rigid solutions.

The partnership also leaned into New Zealand Mint’s need for flexibility. “We’re developing new go-to-market strategies and product offerings,” Babic notes. “Lancom’s can-do attitude and thoughtful approach help us stay ahead.”

Whether it’s supporting the online collectibles platform or ensuring the Auckland bullion branch runs smoothly, Lancom’s services have slotted seamlessly into New Zealand Mint’s operations.

Results

Six months in, the impact is tangible. “It’s gone very well,” Babic says. “Having dealt with Lancom before, I had high expectations—and they’ve been met.” The IT estate now supports New Zealand Mint’s 40-strong team with reliability and agility, critical for a business juggling bullion trading and a growing collectibles market. “A partner that understands our business and keeps best practices in mind is invaluable,” he adds.

Security enhancements and disaster recovery plans have reduced risks, while 24/7 support ensures issues are tackled fast, vital for a team with overseas staff. “We’re running efficiently and with a peace of mind now,” Babic says. “Lancom is also helping us futureproof our operations.”

The partnership has also freed New Zealand Mint to focus on what it does best: innovating and expanding. “We punch above our weight globally,” Babic reflects. “With Lancom, we’ve got the technological backbone to lean into new opportunities without IT holding us back.”

From licensed character collectibles coins to luxury precious metal items, New Zealand Mint’s evolution continues—and Lancom’s support keeps it all on track.
