Turning ambition into results for more than three decades, Lancom Technology has joined a handful of New Zealand companies to secure Amazon Web Services (AWS) Migration Competency status. The Auckland-headquartered Managed Services Provider and software developer secured the competency by demonstrating proficiency and technical expertise in migrating several clients onto the AWS platform and delivering cost, agility, scalability, and security advantages. 

Migrating to and modernising legacy applications in the AWS cloud requires expertise, tools, and alignment of business and IT strategy. AWS says customers accelerate migration and modernisation journeys, and time to results, by working with AWS-certified partners like Lancom. 

“Legacy applications can become a millstone for many customers, with their organisations dependent on the software, but restricted through issues which can include poor performance, incompatibility with newer software and services, and the big one, potential security risks. Modernising on AWS delivers the familiar benefits of reduced cost and greater flexibility, along with ironclad security associated with the world’s cloud leader,” says Lancom CEO Waruna Kirimetiyawa. 

He notes Lancom has a strong focus on skills and vendor certifications as a key differentiator in a competitive market – skills which, unlike most MSPs, span software development, business process automation, along with IT service management. 

Among the clients Lancom migrated to AWS is multinational web development and content management platform provider Silverstripe. In a highly complex and demanding project, Lancom delivered the groundwork enabling the migration of multiple Silverstripe client websites in the public and private sectors to the AWS cloud from various legacy platforms. 

Silverstripe CEO Tobias Oschwald says that after selecting AWS as the platform of choice, it sought Lancom’s assistance in the creation of an automated framework accelerating the migration from legacy hosts into AWS. Lancom brought capability from high level management of challenging work to iterative programme management in an agile format. 

Oschwald describes the creation of the migration framework as ‘technically sophisticated’. “Lancom worked iteratively through multiple workloads, implementing architectural structures and services supporting the eventual fully functional migration of Silverstripe assets to AWS.” 

With Lancom Technology’s support, Silverstripe has completed the first essential steps in the longer-term strategic initiative of platform modernisation. “In effect, the preparatory work is done so our clients will be able to enjoy the advantages available on that platform,” Oschwald adds. 

“Attempting this journey on our own would have required a massive internal effort; Lancom has created automation and a well-architected framework which brings forward our plans and will accelerate migrations into the AWS cloud.”
