Vision and flexibility: why New Zealand Mint chooses Lancom Technology
Written by Lancom Technology, March 2025
Sometimes it’s all about the technology. Most times, it’s more about alignment, combined vision, and the flexibility to rapidly adapt in a changing world. That’s why New Zealand Mint switched providers to Lancom Technology, opting for a partner that not only understands where the gold dealer comes from, but also where it is going.
The partnership kicked off in September 2024 and strengthens New Zealand Mint’s technological foundation as it continues to innovate and expand its global footprint in bullion trading and collectibles, says CEO Vedran Babic. “We’re a fast moving organisation, constantly evolving and adapting. We need an IT partner that could support us from a ‘backbone’ standpoint. That’s why we shifted to Lancom - we wanted someone better aligned to our vision.”
With prior knowledge of the IT services and software development company, Babic notes that he sought a known quantity. “Having worked extensively with Lancom, I knew what to expect, and we haven’t been disappointed. It wasn’t just about the services—plenty of companies offer those. It is the people, the care, and the responsiveness that make all the difference.”
Established in the 1960s, New Zealand Mint boasts a rich history that began with bullion trading before evolving into commemorative coins and, about a decade ago, pioneering licensed collectibles. As the first mint to license Disney, Babic notes that among the items it produced was, “Quite literally Mickey Mouse money.” New Zealand Mint now operates two distinct brands: New Zealand Mint for bullion trading and Agoro for its collectibles business including licensed coins and precious metal luxury items.
With headquarters in New Zealand, the company punches above its weight on the global stage, partnering with world-famous brands to serve customers worldwide.
Lancom Technology CEO Priscila Bernardes says there are more satisfying ways to win business than through word of mouth or strength of delivery. “We’ve looked after and continue to maintain systems at Vedran’s previous employer; the opportunity to deliver the same high standards at New Zealand Mint is an honor and a feather in the cap of our teams,” she adds.
New Zealand Mint’s IT estate supports a 40-person team, including some overseas staff, operating on a Microsoft stack with a combined Windows and Mac footprint. The business spans multiple layers: domestic retail bullion, international wholesale bullion, and a globally distributed collectibles operation that includes an online platform and partnerships with retailers. Additionally, New Zealand Mint maintains a physical branch for bullion transactions in Auckland.
Bernardes says Lancom Technology delivers services including 24/7 IT support, disaster recovery (DR) and business continuity (BC) planning, and security enhancements—key priorities for New Zealand Mint. “What’s clear is that portfolio and skills breadth matters, including our software development capability. That contributes to our value proposition, particularly if and when custom tools and applications become necessary.”
Continuing, Babic says growth and transformation are core to New Zealand Mint’s business agenda. “We’re developing new channels, go-to-market strategies, and product offerings. We don’t settle for the status quo, so we looked for an IT provider with similar muscle and mentality, and capable of keeping up with a client in a constant state of evolution. Lancom’s flexibility, can-do attitude, and thoughtful approach help us futureproof our operations.”
He says onboarding has proven the managed services provider’s chops. “It’s gone very well. Having dealt with Lancom before, there were high expectations which have been met. The team engaged well, executed a smooth transition, and we’ve made solid progress on several fronts.”
Lancom’s expertise as an Advanced AWS Consulting Partner and Microsoft Gold Partner positions it to mitigate risks, enhance system security, and enable New Zealand Mint to lean into new opportunities without IT constraints. “A partner that understands our business and keeps best practices in mind is invaluable,” Babic says. “Lancom helps us run smart and efficiently while supporting our long-term success.”
