Highlights from Ignite 2024

Written by Gregor Blaj, November 2024

Microsoft Ignite 2024 was an interesting showcase of innovation and exciting new technology, with a particular focus on enhancing productivity and collaboration through AI-driven solutions. This year's event brought many exciting announcements, especially around Microsoft Copilot, which continues to evolve and expand its capabilities. Here are the key highlights:

Copilot Agents

One of the key announcements was the introduction of Copilot Agents. These AI-powered assistants are designed to help users navigate and use Microsoft 365 apps more efficiently. Copilot Agents can perform a variety of tasks, from scheduling meetings and managing emails to generating reports and providing insights based on user data. By leveraging advanced machine learning algorithms, Copilot Agents can understand user preferences and workflows, making them a beneficial tool for boosting productivity.
A simple but powerful use case is creating a Copilot Agent which provides answers based on a set of documents. The agent can be restricted to a specific SharePoint library or folder and be prevented from pulling information from the public Internet. This way, when you ask the agent questions, you know the answers come from verified and trusted sources.

Copilot Actions

Building on the success of Copilot Agents, Microsoft also unveiled Copilot Actions. This upcoming feature in early 2025 will allow users to automate repetitive tasks and streamline complex workflows with simple commands. Whether it's automating data entry, setting up reminders, or coordinating team activities, Copilot Actions can handle it all. The integration of Copilot Actions across Microsoft 365 apps ensures that users can maintain a seamless and efficient workflow, reducing the time spent on mundane tasks and allowing them to focus on more strategic activities.
As an example, a Copilot Action can be added to provide a monthly summary regarding a particular customer or product, which will be delivered to your inbox on a set schedule.

Upcoming Changes to Microsoft Teams

Microsoft Teams, a staple for teamwork and collaboration, is also set to receive significant updates. The upcoming changes include enhanced AI-powered transcription and translation features, which will make it easier for teams to communicate and collaborate across different languages and regions. Additionally, new meeting tools and collaboration features are being introduced to improve the overall user experience.

The announcements around Copilot Agents, Copilot Actions, and the upcoming changes to Microsoft Teams highlight the company's focus on leveraging AI to create smarter, more efficient tools for the modern workplace. As these new features roll out, users can look forward to a more streamlined and productive experience across Microsoft 365 apps.
